The Radical Insufficiency of Human Life: The Poetry of R. De Castro and J.A. Silva
Published in Paperback by McFarland & Company (August, 2000)
Author: Aileen Dever
Average review score:

A Winner!
Dever writes a very interesting and incisive comparison of Castro's and Silva's poetry, using literary and historical themes to highlight the meaning and durability of their works. I highly recommend this book because it addresses, through these authors' poetry, some of the most important questions about human life, in a highly enjoyable and "readable" format.

Average review score:

A must read! Castro must go!
The onset of the Cuban Revolution brought about the prospect of reform. Instead the result was a total destruction of a great and unique society. The book chronicles the destruction and will serves as a guide for those unaware of Cuba's declined status.

Revolution and Revolutionaries: Guerrilla Movements in Latin America (Jaguar Books on Latin America (Cloth), No 17)
Published in Hardcover by Scholarly Resources (September, 1999)
Author: Daniel Castro
Average review score:

Castro's book a unique look at guerrillas
Castro sets out to compile an anthology of literature on guerrillas in Latin American history, and he does so in a concise, easy to read volume. I read this book when it was a coursepack, and I liked it then (I also liked the class), as I like it now. Castro's selections sample fairly well-known guerrillas, such as Che Guevara and Zapata, as well as those the average reader has not heard of, like Inti Peredo and Tupac Amaru. More importantly than any one selection, Castro's book sets out the revolutionary tradition in Latin America in a timeline that stretches from colonial Peru to contemporary Central America--and it flows together from piece to piece very well. Simply put, it is a useful resource to any sociologist, anthropologist, or historian interested in Latin American social movements. I would highly recommend it.

Rogelio Salmona
Published in Hardcover by Villegas Editores (April, 1999)
Authors: Ricardo L. Castro, Ricardo L. Castro, Benjamin Villegas Jimenez, and German Tellez
Average review score:

Beautiful, elegant book, just like Salmona's works.
A beautiful book on the works of this outstanding Colombian architect, whose highly elaborated work among the years has been constantly growing in richness and prowess. The book features fabulous pictures of the main built projects of Salmona's career, and some short yet beautiful texts written by Salmona himself, accompanying the pictures. I would have liked to find more biografical information about him, more sketches, some brick details, more information on the design development of the main projects, not just the finished, nice results. But I understand that the book was done exactly as Salmona's personal philosophy in life and architecture is said to be: that he believes the architect as an individual is not an important subject to talk about. That the works of the architect say it all. The book is done according to this thought.

Felicitaciones a Rogelio Salmona por su admirable trabajo de tantos años. Felicitaciones a Ricardo L. Castro por su libro y a Villegas Editores por la calidad en la elaboracion del libro.

Seeking St. Louis: Voices from a River City, 1670-2000
Published in Hardcover by Missouri Historical Society Pr (December, 2000)
Authors: Lee Ann Sandweiss, Robert Boyd, Jan Garden Castro, Gerald Early, Wayne Fields, and Karen M. Goering
Average review score:

A Great Primary History & Great Read
If anybody asked me--describe St. Louis--I can now just hand them a copy of this book. Beginning with Pere Jacques Marquette and concluding with Gerald Early, 300 plus years of St. Louis are illustrated through various memoirs, stories, poems, essays and plays as told by St. Louisans (both well known and lesser known).

Not just mere public relations ad campaign for the region, the collection also confronts issues head-on that have plagued the region for quite some time. However many selections also remind us how many great aspects there are in this region to offer its citizens.

The introductions and bios for the individual authors also provide great context and insight to the pieces, as well as including many interesting tibits of information that even the most knowledgable St. Louisian wouldn't know. Kudos to Lee Ann Sandweiss and everyone at the Missouri Historical Society for assembling an anthology very worthy of anyone who "seeks St. Louis."

Spaniards: An Introduction to Their History
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (May, 1981)
Author: Americo Castro
Average review score:

A penetrating insight into the character of the Spanish soul
Americo Castro, himself a Spaniard, has done a remarkable job of revealing to the interested student the peculiarity of the Spanish mind. Because of the intensity of the Spanish spirit and the strength of its culture, what is revealed is, I discovered, applicable to Hispanic peoples as a whole, be they of the Old World or the New. Read first the Addendum and Appendix. They more than hint at what to expect, and provide a reference point from which to judge more current events, such as the NAZI holocaust, Communist Russia's banishments to Siberia and, most recently, the Serbian expulsion of Kosovars. It is a work most suited to the serious student in search of a deeper understanding of human nature and the development of antagonistic cultures. A brilliant work of Spanish History and, because of Spain's considerable influence at the height of its glory, a must for anyone familiar with the language, but who needs more cultural insight.

Talavera Poblana: Four Centuries of a Mexican Ceramic Tradition
Published in Hardcover by Americas Society (January, 1900)
Authors: Margaret Connors McQuade and Jaime C. Castro
Average review score:

Best Book (for now, anyway) About Talavera
This is the show book for a 1999 exhibition organized by the Museo Bello in Puebla, Mexico, and by The Americas Society and The Hispanic Society of America, both of New York City, in which the treasures of the former and those of Museo Franz Meyer of Mexico City were displayed. It's as academic as it is entertaining, and is in English and Spanish with superb photographs. For anyone who would be a collector, this is the book, for now --- a stipulation given only because of its brevity, and until the sine quo non is published. It's important because little authentic historic talavera is on the market; and because the vast majority of what is produced in Puebla these days is a sad imitation of this artisanal tradition --- whether you buy it in Puebla or attempt to find it on the web. The reader learns the technical terms and about techniques. As the book does not relate to practical buying tips, remember that it is an exhibition book, and not intended as a collector's guide. Then, if it's a bit spare on such historical details as the difference between the Puebla and Guanajuato schools, at least it does relate to talavera's oriental origins. I give it high marks for a show book. As a longtime talavera collector, I am overjoyed with it. Go buy it at Amazon, already, because it isn't available in the stores. And nada más is available in English!
